Major Jacob M. Thornburg is an instructor pilot in the C-17A and Chief, Commander’s Action Group, 62d Airlift Wing, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. He maintains expertise in mission preparation, aircraft systems, in-flight refueling, low-altitude and austere airfield operations in the C-17A. Major Thornburg received his commission in 1999 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program from San Jose State University, Ca and earned his aeronautical rating in 2001 from Vance AFB, Ok.
He has served as an evaluator and instructor pilot on the KC-135R. His assignments include Operations Group Executive Officer and Chief, Standardizations and Evaluations. Major Thornburg served as a Contingency Response Element Operations Officer and Commander in Air Mobility Command’s PHOENIX MOBILITY intern program at Travis AFB, Ca under the 15th Expeditionary Mobility Task Force. Major Thornburg has deployed in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM and HORN OF AFRICA; serving as Tanker Planner, Assistant Operations Officer and KC-135R and C-17A pilot. He served as the Chief Operations ENDURING FREEDOM Tanker Planner at the Combined Air Operations Center, Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar earning the AEF Top Performer Award. In January 2010, Major Thornburg served as the Executive Officer to the 12 AF, Director of Mobility Forces, Joint Task Force-Haiti.
